Eva Belishova grew up in Albania under a dictatorship that silenced artists. Colour, light, and the freedom to make marks were not givens — they were things to be imagined, longed for, and eventually crossed borders to find. When she finally stood before the Old Masters in Italy, and later before the canvases of Van Gogh, she understood that paint could hold all of that longing. This water lily pond is, in quiet ways, a painting about what it means to be free to look at beauty for as long as you wish. The pond is built the way memory is built — not in one sweep but in accumulation. Tap by tap, day by day across three months in her Sausalito studio, Belishova flicked micro-droplets of oil onto linen until the water filled with lily pads, small blooms opened in mauve and gold, and the surface began to glow with the particular quality of late afternoon light on still water. The technique gives the image a quality somewhere between seen and felt: stand close and the pond dissolves into pure colour and chance; step back and everything coheres into shimmer and stillness. There is something of Monet's lifelong obsession in the subject, but Belishova's hand is entirely her own. This is not homage — it is a private conversation between an artist and water, between a woman who once had no freedom to paint and a pond that holds every colour of the sky.
