It is as though the bird has absorbed every hidden path it has ever flown across, and worn them as its own. Eva grew up in an Albania sealed off from the world, where imagination was one of the few truly free spaces left. That early experience of inner life as sanctuary runs quietly through all her work, and it runs deeply through this owl. The labyrinthine surface — coiling teal passages, rivers of aqua, corridors of black and white, eyes burning with orange and gold — feels like the interior of a mind that has never stopped asking questions. It is surreal, but it is also deeply felt. To live with this painting is to live with a presence. The owl watches, patient and knowing, from its dark ground.
