Eva Belishova grew up in Albania under a regime that silenced artists, where colour itself felt like an act of defiance. When she finally reached Italy and then California, the gardens she encountered — overflowing, ungoverned, drunk on sunlight — became a kind of personal freedom made visible. This painting is that freedom made permanent: a vase so full it has ceased to be a vessel and become a world, its contents spilling upward into sky and outward into everything. She built this garden the way she builds all her paintings — not with a brush gliding across the surface, but with thousands of tiny taps of a brush handle, each one releasing a micro-droplet of oil that lands where chance and intention agree. Pansies appear beside roses; tropical leaves curl around peonies; a small owl-like bird watches from the upper left while a slender heron picks its way along the base. Nothing here is accidental, yet nothing feels forced. It is the visual equivalent of a garden that has been loved and then left to dream. To stand before this painting is to feel the warmth of a Sausalito afternoon filtering through an open studio window — the salt air off the Bay mixing with linseed oil, the quiet tapping sound of a brush handle against linen, a world being built dot by luminous dot. Eva has said that her gardens carry what she feels directly onto the canvas. Here, what she feels is abundance, wonder, and the deep pleasure of being alive in a place where painting is free.
